About Pearls

"No two pearls are the same."

Pearls are one of the most captivating gems displaying femininity, romance and beauty. For centuries Pearls have been the symbol of purity, sweetness and pleasure and today they are no different. Pearls are highly valued for their uniqueness and ability to enchant the wearer, often regarded as one of Nature's great miracles. Discovering how the gem formed is quite remarkable, a process stemming back through time.

Natural Pearls are formed when a foreign particle enters an oyster, ie grain of sand. When the sand intrudes on the oyster, the animal tries to expel the grain. If the oyster cannot remove the grain it will then take defensive action coating around it with layers of nacre. Over several years the nacre will continue to coat the foreign matter - thus forming the mystical wonder - the Pearl.

A cultured Pearl involves much the same process, however it is formed by the techniques and manipulation of skilful men who insert foreign matter into a healthy oyster and nurture it for a period until it resembles a natural Pearl.

Creating a strand of Pearls is a great challenge for any Pearl stringer, especially trying to match colour, size and lustre, as no two pearls are the same. Sorting through some 10, 000 pearls is also not uncommon for a Pearler trying to make a perfect pair of earrings.
